Ursula Burns, CEO of Xerox free essay sample

Ursula Burns was born on the lower east side of Manhattan, New York on September 20, 1958. She was born of Panamanian immigrants, raised by her mother, where she lived in public housing. Although her mother was very poor, Burns attended Cathedral High School and received her bachelor of science degree in Mechanical Engineering from Polytechnic Institute of NYU in 1980 and a master of science in Mechanical Engineering from Columbia University. Her internship at Xerox provided her with the graduate degree from Columbia. Ursula became a permanent employee in 1981 and worked in various roles in product development and planning throughout her twenties. The downside of a Cross Sectional Study Is that there is not much data collected that can show cause and effect. Longitudinal Studies are a form of observational study, where no manipulation of the study or subjects takes place. There are both positives and negatives to the Longitudinal Study. One of the positives, as mentioned earlier, is the study ability to collect large amounts of data. This data can be used to prove or disprove a hypothesis related to change over time. When administering interviews or questionnaires, an informal interview approach is preferred. When performing interviews or providing a questionnaire to subjects, information can oftentimes be one-sided. Each of these methods has their strengths. In Cultural Anthropology, the focus is to understand the subjects completely; to determine what drives the culture of the group. By following the steps of participant observation the researcher can establish a rapport with the population ND gain additional information through trust. Additionally, the researcher will experience the groups way of life which will also add to further understanding. There are several steps to participant observation after you have established rapport within the group, second you do as they do. Simply put, you try to live as the group you are observing is living; learn customs, rituals and routines. During this process continue to make observations and record them. The observations you record are then analyzed at the end of the study. One important step for the researcher is to determine the level of immersion. If the researcher immerses themselves too deeply objectivity could be lost and the study results could be biased or skewed. Participant Observation is the primary mode of study in Cultural Anthropology due to its ability to provide a large amount of data, show cause and effect and generally be unbiased. Longitudinal Studies in Sociology and Participant Observation in Cultural Anthropology have their similarities. Both studies are a form of qualitative research. Qualitative research involves the researcher designing the study, then collecting and analyzing the data. Continuity in the researcher is important to the study as there is a relationship established between them and the study participants. In Tartans Study, three generations of researchers have managed the study participants in 75 years. Each director has established themselves with the participants and continued the focus of the research. In observational studies, especially those in which the researcher practices immersion, continuity is crucial to the rapport established within the group. That researcher or group of researchers, are collecting data based on their experiences while living within the group. If a researcher only stayed a day or two before trading off with someone else, they would not have time to develop that relationship and could possibly miss collecting valuable data. Contrastingly, each of these methods of research are used differently. When used in Sociology the focus is that of social interactions between groups or within groups of people. How do people interact with each other, what causes them to act the way that they do? In Cultural Anthropology the culture itself is studied. The deep underlying motives for rituals, community hierarchies and beliefs. In a longitudinal study, the researchers follow the participants through their lifetimes, they do not integrate into their life, they do not try to immerse themselves. They simply observe, periodically checking in on the subject at intervals determined to produce an additional data set. Each method works as it is intended; each method of observation are frequently used in all areas of research and can be applied in many different ways. Many methods of data collection seemingly overlap and its up to the researchers in these studies to be aware of the parameters and stay within the boundaries of the study. The Flea: Rhetoric and Poetry Mingling In John Donne’s poem, â€Å"The Flea†, Donne uses the conceit of the flea to contrast the insignificant size of the flea and the incredibly significant metaphor attached to the flea. The speaker of the poem is talking to a woman, trying to convince her into having sex with him outside of marriage. This poem can be broken into three stanzas, of nine lines each, utilizes the image of the flea to convey three main ideas: the first as a vessel where their essence mingles, second as the institution of marriage, and finally as an insignificant representation of honor which would have no effect on them. Donne’s hyperbolic use of the flea extends through the poem as a metaphysical conceit to convey a logical argument out of something seemingly unrelated to the situation at hand. The speaker starts his argument by first mentioning that the woman has denied the speaker something. However, it is initially unclear what was denied, all that is known is that by taking note of â€Å"†¦this flea, and mark in this,/How little that which [she] deniest [him] is†¦Ã¢â‚¬ , thus paralleling how the flea, just like whatever she denies him, is inconsequential (Donne lines 1-2). This idea of insignificant things meaning much more in the grand scheme of things becomes an underlying thread, which is sewn throughout the poem. The speaker then notes how â€Å"†¦in this flea [their] two bloods mingled be†¦Ã¢â‚¬ , alluding to an erotic mingling of their blood (Donne line 4). This symbolizes the very essence of these two intertwining and becoming one in a single vessel. The flea is a vessel that symbolizes union, in this case the physical union between the speaker and the woman through sexual intercourse and the exchange of bodily fluids. It is impo... ... mean nothing in the end. Essentially his argument boils down to proving that sex with the speaker would not be shameful or sinful, and that all her fears are unfounded. Donne uses the flea throughout his poem as an essential link between sexual conquest and union. The flea transcends its initial existence as an irritating bug and become an existence essential to their union. It is through this representation of the flea, which allows Donne to draw the reader into an argument of carnal desire trumping propriety. Comparison: Shakespeare’s Sonnets and Sonnet

Compare and Contrast Sonnet 18 and Sonnet 130 by William Shakespeare In this essay I am going to highlight the comparisons and contrasts between William Shakespeare’s Sonnet 18 and Sonnet 130 and also give my opinions. A similarity between the two poems is that they are both about a man’s love for a woman. Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day? Thou art more lovely and more temperate: Meaning that the woman that Shakespeare loves in Sonnet 18 is ‘more lovely’ than a ‘summer’s day’ and she is just right for him, as summer can sometimes be too hot. In Sonnet 130, it’s also about Shakespeare’s love for a woman.And yet, by heaven, I think my love as rare As any she belied with false compare. This shows that Shakespeare still loves the woman that the poem is about. Even though in the rest of the poem Shakespeare highlights all of her bad points. My Mistress’ eyes are nothing like the sun; Coral is far more red tha n her lips red; This means that the woman’ s eyes in this poem are nowhere near as bright as the sun and her lips aren’t as red as coral, but even though she has her bad points, Shakespeare still loves her. This shows that Sonnet 18 and Sonnet 130 are similar in the way they are both about Shakespeare’s love for a woman.Another comparison between Shakespeare’s Sonnet 18 and Sonnet 130 is that in both the poems Shakespeare uses metaphors to describe the two women in the poems. This shows that another comparison between the two poems is that the women in both of them are anonymous.One of the differences between Shakespeare’s Sonnet 18 and Sonnet 130 is that in Sonnet 18, Shakespeare highlights the woman’s beauty, but in Sonnet 130, Shakespeare highlights the woman’s faults. But thy eternal summer shall not fade, Nor lose possession of that fair thou ow’st, Here, in Sonnet 18, Shakespeare is saying that the woman’s beauty never fades whereas summer fades a fter a while. In Sonnet 130 Shakespeare highlights the woman’s bad points. This is a complement from Sonnet 18, which means, as long as people can see and as long as she is alive she will be beautiful and full of life.In Sonnet 130 though, Shakespeare insults the woman. And in some perfumes is there more de light Than in the breath that from my mistress reeks. This insult from Sonnet 130 is saying that perfumes smell a lot better than his wife’s breath. This shows that a difference between Shakespeare’s Sonnet 18 and Sonnet 130 is that in Sonnet 18 Shakespeare complements the woman, whereas in Sonnet 130, Shakespeare insults the woman. My view is that these two sonnets are both love poems. I think in Sonnet 130 Shakespeare insults and highlights the woman’s bad points, but he still loves the woman he talks about.And yet, by heaven, I think my love as rare As any she belied with false compare. Personal Branding Plan Paper Essay

I have over ten years of cleaning experience from starting out as a dishwasher to cleaning in hospitals, hotels, and residential buildings. From those experiences I have found I enjoy interacting with people and making their stay, where ever that might be, more enjoyable. Yes, it can make finding new jobs, outside the cleaning industry, more difficult; however, I’m always up for a new challenge. I do not intend to stay in the cleaning industry forever. I would rather work in an industry that specializes in helping make memories for people and their families. Working in hospitals, hotels, and restaurants I have developed an understanding of what people expect out of their stays. Especially when they are usually spending a large amount of money, people want to feel special, important, and recognized. I want to be a part of all of that. To be honest, I have never thought about the companies I would like to work for until this week. Knowing that I want to be able to interact with people the three companies I would enjoy working for would be Xanterra Parks & Resorts, the Carnival Cruise line or InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG). Each of these companies is about making an enjoyable experience for people that stay with them and for employees to making memories along the way. If you want to make a living working in the ten largest National Parks in North America, Xanterra Parks & Resorts is the place to do it. This is one of the ultimate ways to help people make memories. When it comes to working for this company, there are two destinations I would like to work Yellowstone National Park and Glacier National Park. Although most of the positions provided by this company are seasonal the benefits provided are amazing. Employees can receive â€Å"full health care, dental, eye, disability and life insurance as well as vacation pay and a 401K program† the only requirement is to work two consecutive seasons at any park operated by Xanterra Parks & Resort (Glacier Jobs, 2014). This company is in the hospitality industry just as Carnival Cruise line and InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG). Carnival provides jobs either  on land or at sea. According to â€Å"Carnival† (2014), For over 40 years, Carnival has strived to provide a comfortable, â€Å"Fun† working environment for its employees and has created a number of forward-thinking programs that offer unique opportunities for professional and personal growth† (para. 1). Working on a cruise ship, I would have the opportunity to work behind the scenes of how the guests enjoy their experience; whether it is in guest services or housekeeping. Each job is just as important when creating guest satisfaction. InterContinental Hotels Group– If you have ever stayed at the Holiday Inn, Holiday Inn Express & Suites, or Candlewood Suites, then you have stayed under the IHG brands. I have had the opportunity to work for one of the IHG brands and have learned the inside and outsides of how a hotel should be operated. The time and effort put into creating guest satisfaction is endless, and it takes the entire group of employees to make it successful. A guest’s ultimate experience depends entirely on the hotel staff. IHG is all about making that experience the best one. It is also about allowing its employees to grow. At IHG no matter what brand you are under the â€Å"manager will work with you to create a personal development plan that helps you develop your capabilities and build the skills and experiences you need for the future† (IHG, 2014). Unless you have experience managing in hospitality the best way to go up the ladder is to start at the bottom. The best method to contact any of these companies is to apply either in person or online. Another method would be to call where you want to work and get to know the people in human resource. By asking as many questions as you can about the company and inserting yourself as much as possible will allow those who influence the hiring decision get to know you and how interested you are about their company. These three companies provide experience in interacting with people, helping make memories, and the opportunity to grow as a person. It just comes down to deciding which one would be a better fit. How to Conjugate Utiliser (to Use) in French In French, the verb  utiliser  means to use. This is pretty easy to remember because it looks and sounds like the English word utilize. French students will be happy to know that the conjugations are almost as easy. Thats because its a regular verb, so transforming  utiliser  into the French for using or used follows a very common rule. This lesson will explain everything you need to know.
